Mr. Douglas W. Derks, age 96 of Fremont, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday afternoon, August 6, 2019. He was born on June 7, 1923 in Douglas, Michigan to John & Grace (VanOs) Derks. Doug was a US Army Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He had been a meat cutter for A & P Stores, until he purchased and operated Mini-Mart in Fremont from 1971-1991. Doug was a member of Fremont United Methodist Church. He also loved spending time with his family, as well as spending time on Crystal Lake. On June 18, 1948 he married Dorothy A. Harris and she preceded him in death on April 1, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his brother Cornelius Derks, and by his sister June Westbrook. Doug is survived by 2 children: Susan (William) Conway of Fremont, Mike (Claire Marie) Derks of Fremont; 2 grandchildren: Christy (Duane Evink) Conway, Dr. W. Charles (Dr. Elizabeth Krenz) Conway; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Fremont United Methodist Church with Pastor Julie Fairchild officiating. There will also be a time of visiting with the family at the church from 1-2 PM on Wednesday. Suggested Memorial: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
