Aplonia "Polly" Hoekman Obituary

Aplonia Plaisier Hoekman—Polly Hoekman to all who knew her—passed away peacefully and of natural causes on April 10, 2021.  Polly was born on July 8, 1926, to Martha and Gerrit Plaisier of Grant, and lived to the age of 94.  She married Ray Hoekman in 1948 and together they had 3 children: Greg, Steve, and Sue. They were married for 65 years.  Raised with a strong Dutch Protestant work ethic, Polly was always willing to step in and help with whatever needed to be done. Starting as a kid working in the onion fields east of Grant, she continued working for much of her adult life. A gifted floral designer, she especially enjoyed her years at Jensen’s Flower and Gift Shop in Grant.  Polly loved to laugh and have fun, and had many close friends. After Ray retired, she and he spent many happy winters on Anna Maria Island, FL. An avid golfer, she played in leagues mostly at Northwood Golf Course after she and Ray moved to Fremont.  She remained devout in her faith to the end of her life, and in later years would often stop a conversation to offer a brief prayer of thanks for her children and what she always called “a wonderful life.” Those who knew Polly will remember her saying, “If I don’t have any more fun in my life, I’ve had enough.”  Polly is survived by her children Greg (Thea) Hoekman, of Fremont, Steven (Nancy Bauer) Hoekman of Brooklyn, Mi., and Sue (James) Considine of Snowmass Village, Co. Also surviving are her sister Flossie (Plaisier) Lampen and brother Jerry Plaisier, granddaughters Heather Hoekman and Megan Considine, and great-grandchildren Bentlee and Brayden Vandeborne.  She joins those who preceded her in passing over: her beloved husband Ray Hoekman, her siblings Angie Vogel, Henrietta Plaisier, and Wilbur (Webb) Plaisier, granddaughter Jennifer Considine, and grandson Justin Hoekman.  A special thank you to the  caregivers at Green Acres in Fremont, where Polly spent her final years in great comfort, and to the nurses from Spectrum Health Hospice.  The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Second Christian Reformed Church in Fremont with Pastor Doug MacLeod officiating. Visitation will also be at the church from 12-1 PM on Tuesday.  Masks are recommended, and the service will be live streamed at the following Youtube link: http://www.tinyurl.com/2ndcrclive. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery near Grant.  Suggested Memorial:  The Newaygo County Compassion Home - Fremont.  You can sign the online guest book at www.koeze-wolffis.com.  Arrangements are by Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home, Inc of Fremont.
