Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Mikowski, age 88 of Fremont, went to be with his Lord and Savior while surrounded by his family late Wednesday evening August 23, 2023. He was born on February 8, 1935 in Traverse City, Michigan to Anselm and Mary (Bembeneck) Mikowski.
While in high school, Bernie joined the Navy Reserves and then went on to graduate from Northwestern Michigan Community College with an Associates Degree. He continued his education at Michigan State University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1958. Following graduation he was drafted and served with the US Navy on the USS Galveston. After serving his country, Bernie used his business degree to work as a distribution manager for Gerber Baby Food Products for 30 years until his early retirement in 1990.
On June 20, 1959, Bernie married the love of his life, Norma Jean Montague. She preceded him in death on November 21, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: William Mikowski, Anselm “Dutch” Mikowski and his wife Willa, Gerald Mikowski and his wife Patricia.
Bernie is survived by his three children: Michael (Kimberly) Mikowski of Grand Rapids, Mark (Christine) Mikowski of Sparta, Cheryl (Jason) Mooney of Jenison; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey, Stacey and her husband Travis, Ian and his wife Emily, Brian, Kayla, Brooke and Cody; two brothers: James (Barbara) Mikowski, Robert (Donna) Mikowski; sister-in-law Lynn (David) Basler; and by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Bernie was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. He also devoted much of his time serving Big Brothers Big Sisters, American Cancer Society and Commission on Aging. Bernie was an avid golfer of which he joined several leagues and made many lasting friendships. He treasured living on Fremont lake while enjoying the many activities shared with family. He liked to fish, especially going on the annual family fishing trip. He loved traveling, going on cruises and spending winters in Las Vegas. Of utmost importance was spending time and making memories with family and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 1, 2023 at All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont, Michigan with Fr. Lou Anderson as Celebrant. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont. Visitation will be held at All Saints Church from 10-11AM on Friday. In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials include The American Cancer Society or Catholic Services Appeal. You can sign the online guest book at www.kroeze-wolffis.com.
