Betty Jane (Gater) Coburn
Betty passed away peacefully October 14, 2021 while at home with family. She was born September 15, 1926 in Weed, California which is at the foot of Mt. Shasta, the third daughter of Frank and Agnes Gater. Betty enjoyed school, graduating Valedictorian from Weed High School in 1944.
After graduation she was off to Sacramento to work as a teletypist for the U.S. Government. While ringing in the 1945 New Year, she met a very special Sailor who was on shore leave. In November, she boarded a train to Michigan to marry Gunners Mate Merrick E. Coburn November 24, 1945. They were married 35 good years and were blessed with two daughters, Paulette (Tom) Maxson and Frances (Fred) Coon. Merrick passed away in 1980.
Betty was the bookkeeper for Chipmans Inc. / Landscape Forms Inc. from 1960 to 1988. After retiring she volunteered at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo, MI. The summer of 2014, she moved to Fremont, MI to be close to her family. Over the years she enjoyed the company of her grandchildren: Jennifer Maxson (deceased), Brian Coon, Adele (Kelly) Wigent, and Melissa (Dan) Sanders. Great-grandchildren were the joy of her later years: Travis Coon, Taylor Coon, Thomas Wigent, Abigail Sutton, Jennifer Wigent, Lizzy Sutton and Paige Whitaker.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, October 20th at Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home with Randy McDonald officiating. Visitation will also be on October 20th from 10:00am to 11:00am. Interment will be in Sherman Township Cemetery and a luncheon will follow at the Sherman Township Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wellspring Adult Day Services in Fremont, MI. You can sign the online guest book at www.kroeze-wolffis.com.
