Carl Hendrie Obituary

Carl Maver Hendrie, age 90 of Fremont, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022 at the Newaygo County Medical Care Facility.  Carl was born on December 2, 1932 in Fremont to Maver Nick and Susie (Barnett) Hendrie, the 3rd of 11 children.  Carl served in the Army during the Korean War.   He married Marlene Kay Smith, they raised three children and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.  Carl worked at the Gerber Products Company for 40 years until his retirement in 1993.

Carl was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He was always a presence at his grandchildren’s events and delighted in watching them participate in soccer, hockey, softball, band performances and dance.  After retirement Carl and Marlene spent winters in Florida visiting family and entertaining frequent guests.

Carl is survived by his wife, Marlene of Fremont, sons Mike (Vicki) of Rockford, Greg (Carol) of Fremont and daughter Jennifer (Tyler) Kauffman of Muskegon; grandchildren Erin, Elizabeth, Kayla, Cameron, Tucker, Rylee and great- grandchild Raven.  He also leaves behind one brother, Jim (Norma) Hendrie; three sisters, Marty (Ralph) Radillo, Judy (John) Dean, and Barb Dean; one brother-in-law, Jon Carl (Sandy) Smith. Preceding him in death were brothers, Harold, Charlie, and Chester; sisters, Bessie Goetsch, Grace Derks and Fay Bolles; sister-in-law, Lillian Smith; brothers-in-law, John Goetsch, Max Derks, Sonny Bolles, Ed Dean and Thad Smith.  

Carl’s family will hold a private graveside interment at Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont, and will have a celebration of life at a later date.  Suggested Memorial:  The Fremont Area District Library.
