Charlene Joan (Goddard) Winegarden

Charlene Joan Winegarden, age 91 of Newaygo, passed away late Wednesday evening, April 9, 2025 at Big Rapids Fields Assisted Living.  She was born on September 21, 1933 in Los Angeles, California to Charles & Maxine (Stone) Goddard.  Charlene graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles, California, and married Joseph F. Winegarden on September 29, 1951.  They moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1962 and then to Newaygo, Michigan in 1968.  They owned and operated Joe’s Store and Joe’s Dog House in Grant for several years.  Charlene was a member of St Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo.  She loved her winter home at Schalamar Creek in Lakeland, Florida and her many friends there.  She enjoyed gardening, playing cards with her Friday night Pickeral Lake friends, shopping, and her greatest joy was spending time with her family.  Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Winegarden, on August 18, 2001; by her companion of 16 years, Gordon Ostman; and by her sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Jacquelyn & Robert Burns.  She is survived by 5 daughters:  Cathy (Jon) Swinehart of Newaygo, Mary Jo (Mark) Swinehart of Grand Haven, Lisa (Harold) Portell of Grant, Theresa (Terry) Westcott of Newaygo, Peggy (Dan) Sorden of Newaygo; 16 grandchildren & 27 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister, Dorothea Goddard of California; and by several nieces & nephews.  The family would like to thank Community Pace, Big Rapids Fields Assisted Living, and Hospice of Michigan for all of their kindness and care.  Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at St Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo with Fr. Noah Thelen as Celebrant.  Interment will be in St Bartholomew Catholic Cemetery.  There will also be a time of visiting with the family at the church from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 PM, and from 10-11 AM on Thursday.  Suggested Memorial:  The St Bartholomew Catholic Church Building Fund.  You can sign the online guest book at www.kroeze-wolffis.com.  Arrangements are by Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home, Inc. of Fremont.
