Charles Edward Veverka, 81, of White Cloud, Michigan, died June 17, 2026, leaving behind a family that will always miss him. Today, he is alive in God’s own country, and reunited with his wife, Suzanne.

Charlie was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and was the son of Carrie (Mundt) and Alvin Burrell Veverka. He was raised on Zoschke Road in Hagar Township, Michigan, with his brothers, Jerry and David.

As a boy, Charlie enjoyed camping with the Boy Scouts, fishing with his maternal grandfather, Ed “Gramps” Mundt, and playing with neighborhood friends, including the Megna family children. As a teen, he enjoyed his much-loved metallic brown 1958 Chevy Impala convertible and didn’t mind drag racing if the occasion called for it. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1963. Charlie served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, remaining stateside at Fort Knox. After the service, he lived in the St. Joseph area, where he owned and managed rental properties. Later Charlie transitioned into banking, serving as a consumer loan officer.

He married Suzanne in 1985, and together with Suzanne’s son, T.J. Meister, settled in White Cloud. In the early 1990s, he and Suzanne took a bold step and launched into real estate appraising. Over the years, they grew Real Estate Appraisers Inc. into a thriving business, which Charlie’s youngest daughter, Gina Veverka, carries on.

Charlie loved the outdoors, especially rambling through the woods with his Scottie or Labrador retriever or watching the sunset over Lake Michigan. He and his older daughter, Amber, spent hours fishing in trout streams and on inland lakes or, just as often, talking over coffee of the fish they didn’t catch. He and Suzanne enjoyed road trips up north to peaceful places, especially in the Upper Peninsula, where they relished the silence and the grandeur of nature. They loved tooling around the back roads either in Suzanne’s red Miata or Charlie’s red Corvette – both convertibles, of course.

He and Suzanne enjoyed time with T.J. and his wife, Liz, and their pups, often celebrating the holidays together. And they traveled frequently to North Carolina to visit their grandchildren, Charlie and Gina Grace Paddock. Charlie imparted to them his trademark dry sense of humor, quick wit and an appreciation for fanciful stories (which they at first believed with wide-eyed wonder, until they caught on). But his greatest gift to his grandchildren was his undivided attention. He was deeply interested in them as people, and a great listener.

Charlie was a constant reader and deep thinker, and someone who enjoyed blue-sky conversations on long car rides and over weekly lunches with Gina. An early-morning person all his life, he would sit on his deck at dawn with a cup of coffee, “talking to God,” as he put it. After losing Suzanne in late 2024, Charlie’s trust in Jesus grew, and he spoke with confidence about his future after death. He looked forward to being reunited with Suzanne and seeing God face to face.

Charlie is survived by his daughters, Amber (Craig) Paddock and Gina Veverka, his stepson T.J. (Liz) Meister, his grandchildren, Charlie and Gina Grace Paddock, his granddog Maci, and his brothers, Jerry (Phyllis) Veverka and David (Kathy) Veverka. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne, and his parents, Alvin and Carrie Veverka.

A viewing will be held Monday, June 22, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home in Fremont, Michigan, with a short sharing of memories of both Charlie and Suzanne to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made either to The Mayfly Project for the Grand Rapids, Michigan Project which mentors children in foster care through fly fishing, or to TrueMentors, a program run by TrueNorth Community Services of Fremont, which connects children in Newaygo County with positive role models who care about them.
