Darin Lee Thompson (“Drift”)
December 22, 1965 – April 22, 2026
Darin Lee Thompson, affectionately known as “Drift,” passed away on April 22, 2026, at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, following a brief illness. He was 60 years old.
Darin was born on December 22, 1965, in Big Rapids, Michigan, to Don and Darlene Thompson. He spent the last 12 years of his life in Fremont, Michigan, where he continued to pursue the hobbies and passions that brought him joy.
Darin had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid bike rider. He also found great fulfillment in woodcrafting, creating meaningful gifts for his grandchildren and his many great nieces and nephews. His creativity extended into painting, and throughout his younger years, he enjoyed building and working with mechanics—always finding satisfaction in creating and fixing things with his hands.
Above all, Darin cherished his family. He is survived by his father, Donald Thompson Sr.; his daughter, Britnie (Josh) Starr; and his beloved grandchildren, Christian, Ava, and Jude. He is also survived by his siblings, Douglas (Debra) Thompson, Diane (Michael) Dennis, Dawn Paris, and Darbie Thompson, along with many extended family members who will miss him dearly, including his lifelong friend Doug Ross and close friend Nicole.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene Thompson, and his brother, Donald Thompson Jr.
A graveside service will be held on May 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Pine Plains Cemetery, Colfax Township in Big Rapids, Michigan. There will not be any reception following the service.
Darin will be remembered for his quiet strength, kind heart, and the way he showed up for the people in his life. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.
