September 11, 1925 ~ April 22, 2022 (age 96)

Obituary

Helen Elizabeth Veenstra, age 96 of Holton, went to be with her Lord and Savior early Friday morning, April 22, 2022.  She was born on September 11, 1925 to John Arvid and Bertha Mildred (Peabody) Miller on the family farm south of Fremont.  After graduating from Fremont High School she worked as a switchboard operator at the local telephone company.

On April 13, 1946 she married Paul J. Veenstra, who was in charge of the family farm.  They were dairy and poultry farmers for years, but are perhaps best remembered for their u-pick strawberry patch, which is still a family enterprise.  Helen was an avid gardener, active with Farm Bureau and a Greenwood Township Election Board Member.  She was a longtime member of Second Christian Reformed Church, active in service ministries at the church and in Helping Hands at Fremont Christian School.  She was known by friends and non-relatives as "Aunt Helen."

She was preceded in death by Paul on November 27, 1999.  Helen was also preceded in death by her brother Merwin Miller, and by her sister Beverly Dyer.  She is survived by her five children:  Carol Kaiser, Doris (Bob) Broekema, Wayne (Mary) Veenstra, Douglas Veenstra, Marilyn (Terry) Kartes; 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson; one sister, Joyce Michalak and one brother, Charles (Judy) Miller; sisters-in-law:  Devona Miller & Marian Veenstra; and by many nieces & nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Second Christian Reformed Church of Fremont, Pastor Doug MacLeod officiating.  You can watch the service livestream at tinyurl.com/2ndcrclive.  Visitation will be held at the Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home from 6-8 PM on Thursday, and at the church from 10-11 AM on Friday.  Interment will be at Clark Cemetery west of Fremont following a noon fellowship luncheon.  Suggested Memorial:  World Renew—the worldwide ministry of mercy of the Christian Reformed Church.  You can sign the online guest book at www.kroeze-wolffis.com.  Arrangements are by Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home, Inc. of Fremont.
