Irene Marie (Howard) Pummel

Irene Marie Pummel, age 80 of Newaygo, passed away on Sunday morning, August 4, 2024 at her home after battling cancer.  She was born on November 18, 1943 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Bert & Maxine (Nielsen) Howard, Jr.  She had been employed by Newaygo Public Schools as a teacher’s aide for 36 years until her retirement.  Irene loved spending time with her grandchildren.  She also enjoyed quilting, her flower gardens, bowling, and going to antique car shows.  Irene was a huge Ohio State Buckeyes fan.  On July 1, 1961 she married Edwin “Red” Jay Pummel, and he preceded her in death on May 8, 2020.  She was also preceded in death by her parents.  Irene is survived by 3 children:  Collene (Carl) Merritt, Arlene (Daniel) Vander Ploeg, Gregory (Angie) Pummel; 4 grandchildren:  Erica O’Brien, Kacy Reed, Ryan (Sam) Huismann, Andrew (Allison) Huismann; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 brother & 4 sisters; and by nieces, nephews, and friends.  Visitation will be from 1-4 PM on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home.  A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Newaygo Cemetery with Pastor Mark Bushen officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to AdvisaCare Home Health Hospice, where Irene received such great care and support from her nurse Liz.  You can sign the online guest book at www.kroeze-wolffis.com.  Arrangements are by Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home, Inc. of Fremont.
