Jean Ann (Nilson) Schuler
(8/2/1947 – 8/17/2025)
It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing of Jean Schuler. She began her earthly journey on August 2, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. Within a year the family moved to Michigan and lived in several South West Michigan locations before settling in Coloma where she graduated from High School. She was preceded in death by her parents Neil and Frances Nilson and her sister Nancy.
Upon graduating from high school she attended Western Michigan University obtaining her bachelor’s degree in teaching. She then studied at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan along with a semester in England at the University of London in a cooperative exchange with MSU. She then earned a Master’s degree in Reading and began her teaching career as an elementary teacher in Rockford, Michigan in 1969. She transferred to Hudsonville Elementary where she continued to teach until 2000, completing 31 years of service. After moving to Fremont upon retirement she became actively involved in the community serving several terms as president of The Fremont Garden Club, The Friends of The Library and the Tall Pines Quilt Guild. She also served one term as the State Chairman of the Michigan Ladies Ducks Unlimited. Jean was a gifted educator and excelled at gardening, cooking, sewing and quilting. She was in fact a fabric artist.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, DuWayne Schuler, sister Phyllis Wojcik, numerous nieces, one nephew, and countless young scholars who benefited from her early guidance. We would like to acknowledge the special end of life care and comfort provided by nieces Kim Sevic, Jennifer Gandolfo and Hailey Wojcik. We also appreciate the care and compassion provided by the angels of the Corewell Health Hospice & Palliative Care team.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-4 P.M. on Saturday, September 13, 2025 in the Fireside Room at Lakes 23 Restaurant and Pub.
She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Jean Schuler Education Fund through the Fremont Foundation.
