John Edward Downs

John Edward Downs, age 80 of Hesperia, passed away peacefully Monday evening August 15, 2022 at his home. He was born August 4, 1942 to the late Harry Edward and Vira Beatrice (Bosley) Downs in Columbus, Ohio. John worked for the A&P Stores and the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Columbus, Ohio where he retired from when he was 50. After retiring, he worked for Schwann’s in Fremont, Michigan.  John enjoyed fishing, bowling, euchre, black & white classic westerns and basketball. He was an avid reader and loved his kitties. John was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron #411 in Hesperia, Michigan.  On February 14, 1977, he married Georgia Carlson Hance and she survives him along with children: John Hance, Mark (Tiffany) Hance, Cathy (Terry) Metheney, Christopher (Jo) Hance; 9 grandchildren & 1 great grandson. He is also survived by his in-laws: Earl, Connie, Sandra, Casey & Julia; and by many nieces & nephews who loved their Uncle John. John was preceded in death by his sister Nancy Gary and his brother Gene Downs.  John was a loving husband, dad and granddad. He was loved by many friends and was known as “JD” by most. He never met a stranger. He was known to strike up a conversation with strangers wherever he was. He was a gentle, kind and patient dad to his children. He always made us feel precious to him. He was committed to his family and friends. At family cookouts, he was known to like his food “Downs Done”. That meant well done; very well done. That’s the kind of life he led. It was Downs Done.  The family would like to thank all the hospice aides and nurses who took care of John.  There will be a time of sharing beginning at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the Hesperia American Legion Post followed by a memorial luncheon and time to visit until 4:00 PM on Saturday.  Interment will be in West Hesperia Cemetery.
