Lawrence G. Maile, 86 of Newaygo, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 with his family by his side. Larry was born on March 6, 1935 in Grand Rapids, MI to Lawrence and Irma Maile. He graduated from South High School in 1952, and he served with the US Army for 3 years during the Korean War. On March 2, 1957 he married Suzanne Weny and they had 5 children. Larry was a Michigan State Police officer for 32 years retiring from the Newaygo Post as a Sergeant in 1988. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially spending time up north at his hunting cabin with his family. He also spent 34 years as a snowbird in Florida where he enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his many friends. Last year he reached a milestone of being retired as long as he had worked. Larry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Suzanne, and children: Jeanne (Larry) Feikema of Newaygo, Michael (Sharon) Maile of Stanwood, James (Joni) Maile of White Cloud, Laurie (Thomas) Gerencer of Grand Haven, Nancy (Mark) Nelson of Newaygo; 16 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson; 1 brother, Robert (Patricia) Maile of Kansas; sister-in-law, Maxine Nelson of Gulfport, Mississippi; brothers-in-law: Carl (Marlene) Weny of Grand Rapids, Dr. Bruce (Mary Jo) Weny of Grand Rapids; many nieces & nephews; and a very special friend, Barbara (William) Rossi of Hudson, FL. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Donald Newton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dr. Maximilian and Esteva Weny; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Paula and David Purzecki; and brothers-in-law, Rene Weny and Norman Nelson. Larry has been a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo since 1969. He was a very devoted Christian, and believed strongly in the power of prayer and in his Lord Jesus Christ. Visitation will be held at St Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo from 5-8 PM on Friday, September 17, 2021, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7 PM. Visitation will also be at St Bartholomew Catholic Church from 10-10:45 AM on Saturday, September 18, 2021, where Military Honors will start at 10:45 AM. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday with Fr. Steve Geerling as Celebrant. Interment will be at St Bartholomew Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Fremont Area Community Foundation for the T.R. and Bonnie Deur St. Bartholomew Catholic Church Building Fund, or a charity of your choice.
