Louis Jay Deur, affectionately known as “Lou” and "Great Grandpa Sweetheart," was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the age of 92 years. Louis was born to the late Eugene and Johanna Deur, in Fremont, Michigan, on February 3, 1930. Louis was the second-generation owner of Deur Chevrolet Sales and a lifetime member of Second Christian Reformed Church in Fremont. These characteristics spoke to who Lou was – a people person who served the interests of others first and notably carried with him a pen and paper to remember the names of those he met in congregation and community.
He died comfortably and at peace with family present and with the knowledge he would soon see his Lord and Savior as well as his beloved wife Beverly. He spent the last few years of his life amongst the staff at Green Acres, who graciously cared for him and provided him the love that he had shown so many others.
In his last days, Lou consistently spoke about how he could not have wanted for any more than the Lord had blessed him with. Louis and Beverly created a large and loving family – full of tradition, love, laughter, and faith. He was preceded in death by Beverly, the love of his life and beautiful wife of 66 blessed years, and his sister Shirley Los. He is dearly missed by his children Garth (Mary), Jonell (Ross) Pettinga, Eric (Wendy), and Christopher (Gabriel Rueda); and sister Carolyn (Gise) Van Baren and brother-in-law Gene Los, who celebrate his joy and comfort in being reunited with his wife and Creator. Alongside Beverly, Lou set a devout and disciplined Christian example, which has been greatly appreciated by his nine grandchildren – Matt, Brandon, Luke, Erica, Drew, Tyler, Dean, Ethan and Ellie – their spouses, and his 17 great grandchildren, who will remember his smile and gentleness.
Visitation will be held at Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home, 637 E Main Street, Fremont, on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 5-7:00 p.m., and on Wednesday, November 2, at 11:00 a.m., at Second Christian Reformed Church, 600 Apache Drive, Fremont. A funeral service in memory of Louis will be held on Wednesday, November 2, at 12:00 p.m., at Second Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Douglas MacLeod officiating. A Livestream of the service will be available on the Second Christian Reformed Church Youtube Page. A family-only interment will occur prior to the funeral at Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Deur to the Fremont Christian School Endowment Fund at the Fremont Area Community Foundation, 4424 W 48th Street, Fremont, Michigan 49412.
Louis lived by the following truth and encouraged those he leaves behind to do the same: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith.
