Louis “Lou” R. Hooker, age 90 of Fremont, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday morning, February 9, 2026. He was born on January 7, 1936 in Fremont, Michigan to Myreenus & Helene (Bartels) Hooker. Lou taught fifth grade at Reeths-Puffer (1964-1966), and fourth-sixth grades at Fremont Christian School (1966-1995). He was also the Sheridan Township Treasurer from 1992-2000. He was a member of Reeman Christian Reformed Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Elder, and Cadet Leader. He enjoyed writing three children’s books: The Year of the Fire, Dog Days on the Farm, and Puppies & Pet Crows. Lou enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing the keyboard & harmonica, reading, table games, camping & traveling. On July 29, 1960 he married Verla J. DeLong and she survives him along with 3 children: Carrie (Al) VanBoven of Fremont, Michigan, Rod (Kim) Hoekert of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Becky (Jeff) Schrotenboer of Holland, Michigan; 8 grandchildren: Dan (Melissa Guritz) VanBoven, Kaitlyn (Megan McLeod) VanBoven, Ryley (Cody) Theien, Jacob (Kareena) Hoekert, Elleah (Adam Glaze) Hoekert, Manny Schrotenboer, Joelle (Hope) Shay, Dante Schrotenboer; 4 great-grandchildren: Max & Avery Rasmussen, River & Iris Hoekert. Lou is also survived by his sisters & brothers: Corrine (Duane) Burt, Dale Hooker, Barb (Stan) Witte, Lloyd (Sally) Hoekert; sister-in-law & brothers-in-law: Arlene Hooker, Doyle (Arlene) DeLong, Frank (Jeanne) DeLong, Fred (Sally Ingersoll) DeLong; and by a multitude of nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister & brothers: Virginia & husband Carl Sneller, Marv & wife Gerry Hooker, Harley Hooker, Les & wife Sylvia Hooker; and by sisters-in-law, Eleanor Hooker & Karen DeLong. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at Reeman Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Nate Kooistra officiating. Visitation will also be at the church from 6-8 PM on Friday, and from 10-11 AM on Saturday.
