Lubertha “Bertie” Joan Bykerk, age 88 of Fremont, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday evening, August 2, 2023. She was born on March 6, 1935 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Peter and Ella (Buyert) Bykerk. Bertie had worked for Kroger Company for over twenty years, and was then employed by and retired from Meijer, Inc. She spent her summers in Fremont and her winters in Englewood, Florida, where she had many dear friendships. Bertie was athletic: avid golfer, softball player, walker, bike rider, and an all-season fisherwoman. Although she never had children of her own, the kids on Long Lake were her babies. She loved rocking them after work, spoiling them with popsicles, and creating festive entries for the 4th of July boat parades. She had photos of many kids, drawings, notes, and graduation open house invites displayed in her home. She loved you and you mattered to her! Her love and loyalty to those she cherished was multi-generational. She valued relationships, was hardworking, frugal, loyal, organized and fiercely independent. Neighbors were family, and nieces and nephews have cherished memories of her beloved stockings at Christmas. Most important to Bertie was being a faithful Christian and member of First Protestant Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Even in her final weeks she was going to church; bedside on a loaned laptop. She waved back to those of you waving at your loved ones. She is survived by her brother, Cornelius (Wilma) Bykerk; sister-in-law, Darlene Bykerk; and many nieces & nephews. Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Ella Bykerk; siblings: Winnie Saurman, Art Bykerk and Arie Bykerk; and by her dear friend, Kathie Jordan. The Bykerk family would like to publicly thank Ann Lapres-Hindes, her compassionate friend, neighbor, and advocate. We consider her friends on Long Lake and in Florida family. Thank you for years of meaningful friendships. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 7, 2023 at First Protestant Reformed Church, 2800 Michigan Street NE, Grand Rapids, MI. 49506, with Rev. James Slopsema officiating. Visitation will also be at the church from 1-2 PM on Monday. Interment will be at Sherman Township Cemetery near Fremont, Michigan. Suggested Memorial: Newaygo County Compassion Home.
