Stephen spent many years in the Lansing area. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School and went to work at the Lansing Board of Water and Light. Stephen had a strong appreciation for music, especially enjoying watching his son play drums in his band and they frequently attended concerts together. Upon his retirement from the Board of Water and Light, he permanently moved to the White Cloud area and enjoyed some of his favorite hunting experiences with his nephew Wayne King.
