April 26, 1932 ~ April 13, 2022 (age 89)

Obituary

Wanda Lorraine (Norton) (Smith) Deur, age 89, of Fremont, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2022.  She was born on April 26, 1932, to Clayton and Goldie Norton of Walkerville.

Wanda graduated from Muskegon High School and the Bronson School of Nursing (Kalamazoo) in 1956, with her L.P.N. degree. She loved being a nurse.  Her nursing career spanned 65 years at various locations in New Jersey and Michigan including 37 years at Spectrum Gerber Memorial Hospital.  Never one to stay idle, Wanda also worked at Nestle Gerber as the office nurse, as an EMT, at the Newaygo Country Medical Facility, and as a school bus driver for Fremont Public Schools while working at Gerber Memorial.  After retirement, she volunteered in the Gerber Memorial Hospital Gift Shop until COVID closed it.

In 1969 she moved to Fremont to be close to her family.  She loved every family get together and could be counted on to bring a big pot of chili or her famous Texas Sheet Cake.  She was a great game player – cards, UNO, Yahtzee, and especially dominoes.  She loved to travel.  She never met a stranger and could learn someone’s life story in minutes. She made many trips to Indiana and Virginia to be sure her grandkids knew her.  Music was very important to her, she was in choirs from high school through her lifetime, even singing with the Millennial choir in Lincoln Cathedral in York, England.

She cherished the times that she spent with her sisters. The gatherings were more about being together, enjoying meals out, casino trips and shopping.

She will be remembered for her smile, laugh, kind heart, and generosity.

She is survived by her three children, Deborah Smith Cook (Joel) of Springfield, Virginia, Greg Smith (Cindy) of Grand Rapids, MI, and Cheryl Van Hemert (Al) of Fremont, MI and is also survived by four grandchildren, Brent Smith (Leah Wilcox), Heather Erb (Matthew), Bryan (Rachel) McKinley-Myers, Hunter (Gabrielle) Cook and three great-grandchildren, Chance Smith, Jacob Erb, and Xavier Cook.

She is survived by two sisters, Theda West and Judy Van Arman, and many nieces and nephews for whom she was a “second mother.”  She is also survived by her first husband, Hayden Smith, father of her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Ilene Gilchrist, and a special grandson, Travis Cook.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Art Deur who passed in 1996 and her soulmate, Homer Chase (passed in 2005), with whom she had her first date when she was 13 and then reconnected 55 years later.
